High elevation forests around Kamloops are home to interesting species like boreal owls, moose, singing hermit thrush and chattering red squirrels. To see a great variety of them all on your visit to Kamloops, the BC Wildlife Park is a wonderful place to spend the afternoon. You’ll also want to browse through the Kamloops Museum & Archives and the Secwepemc Museum & Heritage Park then take a ride on the Kamloops Heritage Railway’s 2141 ‘Spirit of Kamloops’ steam train. If you’re up for some walking, the Kamloops Museum offers free walking tours of heritage homes in the downtown’s west end.
Kamloops is easy to reach no matter where you are traveling from. By car, it’s a 4 hour drive from downtown Vancouver, 6 hours from Seattle and 7 hours from Calgary. The major transportation routes from BC’s west coast to the Rocky Mountains pass through Kamloops - the Trans-Canada (Hwy 1) and the Coquihalla (Hwy 5). Highway 97 connects to the Okanagan and the states of Washington, Oregon and Idaho. Air, bus, and train access are also available.
